As the Eurasian beaver is increasingly being restored across Britain, its value as a driver of ecological change and biodiversity benefits are increasingly recognised. Beavers are now a protected species in Scotland and England, though their distribution remains fairly limited in extent. The presence of this species generates both opportunities and challenges, especially as it was extinct to British landscapes for nearly 4 centuries. This one-day online workshop examines the history of beavers – both their near complete extinction to their modern era restoration, their behaviours and biology, their ecology and potential impacts, along with their legal status with potential mitigation options. A range of visual material will be presented and discussed, including British case studies, a virtual field sign walk in a beaver wetland, quiz and discussion sessions.
Roisin has worked directly with beavers for the last 15 years including research and monitoring, trapping and translocation, working with landowners to encourage co-existence through the application of various mitigation techniques, and advising a wide range of stakeholders. She has recently joined the Beaver Trust as Head of Restoration.
