National Harvest Mouse Survey Webinar

September 28, 2022 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

This month Derek Crawley and Dr Frazer Coomber will be giving an overview of our National Harvest Mouse Survey! Starting with a brief background of the biology and ecology of the harvest mouse Derek will explain where and how to look for these characteristic woven grass nests and how to identify that it came from a harvest mouse.

Frazer will then go on to talk about our general understanding of the harvest mouse including population estimates and historical distributions before explaining why we’re running the National Harvest Mouse Survey. He will then give you a first look at the results and findings from the first surveying season of 2021/22 and explain how you can get involved in the upcoming season which commences on October 2022.

Derek Crawley is the Vice Chair and Chair of Training Committee at the Mammal Society. He is the Harvest Mouse Survey coordinator for Staffordshire and has been surveying for harvest mice for over 20 years, helping to develop the National Harvest Mouse Survey used today.

Dr Frazer Coomber has been the Science Officer at the Mammal Society for over four years and is the National Harvest Mouse Survey’s national coordinator. He is also the regional coordinator for East Sussex. Frazer’s expertise is in ecological habitat modelling and spatial distribution statistics and has been surveying for harvest mouse nests for more than two seasons using his experience and knowledge to help develop the national survey.

The event will be held at 7:30 pm BST on Wednesday the 28th of September 2022 on Zoom and ticket proceeds will go towards the conservation work of the charity.
