The Highland Tiger: Insights from the Saving Wildcats Project

August 25, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

In this webinar, we’ll be joined by Dr Helen Senn, Head of Conservation and Science Programmes for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and Project Lead for Saving Wildcats, a European partnership project dedicated to Scottish wildcat conservation and recovery, aiming to prevent the extinction of wildcats in Scotland by breeding and releasing them into the wild.

Hear from Dr Senn in this free webinar about the historic release of wildcats that began in June this year in the Cairngorms Connect landscape, as well as all the important work that has been underway for years to ensure maximum chances of success for this charismatic species.

In June 2023, the Saving Wildcats project began releasing 22 wildcats into undisclosed locations within the Cairngorms National Park, marking a landmark moment in efforts to save the ‘Highland Tiger’ from extinction within Scotland. Approved under licence by NatureScot, the Saving Wildcats project is the first-ever conservation translocation of wildcats in Britain in an effort to restore this critically endangered species to its former glory.

The Saving Wildcats project is led by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS). Helen is a specialist in conservation genetics and also works on species conservation strategies and action plans across the globe!
