What is the University Mammal Challenge?
The University Mammal Challenge (UMAC) is the Mammal Society’s annual competition for teams of up to five students from universities and colleges across the UK. Teams survey mammals using approved methods, collect valuable data, and engage their communities in conservation.
Whether you’re recording sightings, running events, or sharing your team’s journey on social media, you’ll be contributing to UK mammal conservation, all while enjoying a friendly competition. With prizes, skills development, and a chance to make a real impact, it’s a challenge you don’t want to miss!

We’re making 2026 bigger and better than ever:

Participant Feedback
“UMAC has given me three months of survey experience that I otherwise wouldn't have gained, and will be invaluable in my future job hunt and career.” — Georgie, UMAC Team Lead of the Lincoln Imps
“Being team lead for the UMAC this year has been such a valuable experience. It’s given me the opportunity to organise fun and educational mammal-focused events, while developing my leadership skills — as well as improving my own mammal identification expertise. Creating our social media materials and curating our campaigns for the challenge has allowed me to step into the world of science communication and share our local wildlife in an engaging, accessible way.” — Molly, Team Lead for SUCES
“The challenge reminded us that conservation and knowledge about fauna doesn’t just belong in a lab or classroom; it’s in the woods, on the riverbanks, and in the parks we walk through every day. And it showed us something even more important: when we connect with nature, we also reconnect with ourselves and that connection can inspire powerful change.” — Salford Stoats Team
