Bioacoustics is an emerging science holding great potential to benefit wildlife monitoring, research, and conservation.
While many would immediately think of bats, bioacoustics can be applied to a variety of species, ranging from small mammals to birds and even frogs!
If you would like to know more about bioacoustics and gain some useful skills, this 2-part workshop is for you.
Introduction to Bioacoustics and Recorder setup (12th of March):
This introductory workshop will look at how bioacoustics can be used as both a survey and a research tool—alone and in conjunction with other methodologies. If you have never used a wildlife audio recorder before, this workshop is for you! Learn how different species vocalize, the equipment you'll need to record them, and how to to set these up for your particular study. Case studies will illustrate the benefits of using bioacoustics to evaluate the health of individual species, species assemblages, and habitats; and conduct academic research and citizen science.
Introduction to basic bioacoustics analysis using kaleidoscope (19th of March):
In this workshop we will cover the basics of working with mammal recordings in Kaleidoscope Lite software, how to navigate through large amounts of data to pull out the species you want to focus on. Both ultrasonic and acoustic recordings will be used in this course. Learn to use the Control Panel & Viewer windows, and play with and understand sonograms. A Kaleidoscope Pro trial license and sample recordings will be provided for attendees to “play along” in class.
Trainer - Paul Howden-Leach: Paul is an international authority when it comes to bioacoustics. He is the Director of Skyline Ecology, a consultancy that he set up in 2013, and closely works with Wildlfe Acoustics, for which he runs online training courses. While his main focus is bats, he also trains people in recording and analysing data for birds, amphibians, other mammals and even underwater animals such as cetaceans and fishes.
