Small mammal road signs

As a result of the recent studies, including the Hedgehog Hotspots research funded by the Mammal Society, PTES and BHPS, methods for mitigating small mammal deaths on Britain's roads are now being introduced.

A new hedgehog road sign, which can be used in areas identified in the study as hotspots for road casualties, has been launched by the Department of Transport. The new sign is designed to remind drivers to be conscious of the presence of not just hedgehogs but all small mammals, with a view to reducing both the number of small mammal road deaths and potential injuries to drivers.

The warning sign is available for any local highway authority in England to use on their roads on application to the Department of Transport. Contact authorisation.requests@dft.gov.uk.
