Discovering Otters: Introduction to their Biology, Ecology and Field Signs (in-person)

Join Lee Jenkins, founder of the South Wales Otters Trust, for a captivating introduction to the world of otters!

This immersive training session offers a comprehensive overview of otter ecology, conservation, and field identification, perfect for anyone keen to deepen their understanding of these remarkable mammals. (Entry level: no prior knowledge or experience needed)

What the course will cover:

• Ecology of Otters
Explore otter ecology in depth, including their behaviour, lifecycle, and the vital role they play in maintaining healthy freshwater ecosystems.

• Identifying Field Signs
Learn how to recognise key indicators of otter presence, improving your confidence and skills when surveying in the wild.

• Legislation and Conservation
Gain insight into the legal protections surrounding otters and discover the conservation measures designed to safeguard their habitats.

• Practical Fieldwork Session
Put your new knowledge into practice during a hands-on field session.

Location: Llanfoist Village Hall, Church Lane, Abergavenny NP7 9LP

With more than 25 years’ experience—including working with otters in captivity as part of his zoo career, as an ecologist, and as a trainer—Lee brings a wealth of expertise.

Following the course, attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in an otter monitoring and conservation programme run by the South Wales Otter Trust.

This course takes place at Llanfoist Village Hall and a nearby field site.

The Mammal Society can provide a CPD certificate on request.

Entry level: This event can be attended by people who have little to no pre-existing knowledge of the topic and wish to develop an initial understanding.

Concession tickets: available for those in education or those on a low income/in receipt of universal credit.
