Discover the fascinating world of the mountain hare, Lepus timidus, Britain’s sole indigenous member of the hare and rabbit family. While primarily inhabiting the Scottish uplands, these elusive creatures can also be found in scattered populations across Britain. However, mounting concerns over their dwindling numbers, particularly in Scotland, have sparked urgent action.

Facing threats from habitat loss due to shifting land use patterns, uncertainties regarding control measures, and resource competition with brown hares (Lepus europaeus), the mountain hare's survival hangs in the balance. Compounding these challenges is the dearth of reliable population data.

To address this critical gap, NatureScot (formerly Scottish Natural Heritage), in collaboration with the Mammal Society, the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), and the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, has launched a collaborative project. Our mission: to gather essential data on mountain hare populations. But we can't do it alone—we need your support.

Join Mammal Society, for an enlightening session delving into the biology of mountain hares, deciphering field signs, and mastering the art of conducting surveys for the Volunteer Mountain Hare survey.

This training comprises a classroom session (approximately 1 hour), followed by a hands-on field expedition to survey for mountain hares (approximately 1 hour), with a brief interlude between sessions for refreshments (Tea/Coffee provided).

As this training forms a cornerstone of our core surveys, we kindly request attendees to contribute what feel appropriate, with a suggested donation of £15.
