Meet our Rangers

Explorers. Storytellers. Conservationists.

The Mammal Society Rangers initiative combines mammal science with great storytelling. Think Nat Geo Explorers, but with a local focus.

We're creating a community of brilliant individuals—whether they're citizen scientists, conservation biologists, filmmakers or storytellers—who are passionate about finding, documenting and protecting the mammal species across the British Isles and Ireland.

As David Attenborough said: “Saving our planet is now a communications challenge.”

And we know that to conserve mammals, we need everyone to record data. And to do that, we need to inspire people to survey and monitor mammals. But how do we do that?

Well, we tell stories of impact that inspire the next generation to protect and restore mammals. That’s what the Mammal Society Rangers are here to do. They won’t just be out there recording data; they’ll film themselves on their adventures, turning each exploration into an engaging narrative that highlights both adventure and conservation.

We award grants to individuals dedicated to our mission to use the power of science and storytelling to protect and restore mammals in the British Isles and Ireland. Mammal Society Rangers are exceptional individuals in the field of mammal science and conservation who receive funding and support from the Society to get out and record mammals, but film themselves while they do it! Becoming a Mammal Society Ranger is about more than just receiving financial support. We would support each Ranger with funding, training, resources and the opportunity to join a community of like-minded people.

What is a Mammal Society Ranger?

A Mammal Society Ranger is someone who takes science and storytelling and combines them to protect and restore mammals in the British Isles and Ireland. They’re not just recording data—they’re turning every adventure, every discovery, into a story that inspires action.

It’s about heading out into the field—canoeing rivers, tracking elusive water voles, or exploring forests—and documenting the journey as much as the science. It’s about creating content with purpose, designed to connect people to conservation in a way that feels real, exciting, and relatable.

Their mission is to illuminate and protect the mammal species of the British Isles and Ireland through their work in scientific research, exploration, education and storytelling. This isn’t just nice videos of mammals. We’re talking a strong human context guiding us through an exploration of the world of mammals including how to find them, how to record them and how to protect them.

  • Simple, really:

    • Great adventures

    • Great discoveries

    • Great stories

We’re asking them to think about what the hook would be, what would make viewers when they tune in for the first five minutes say: “Oh, my God! I have to stick around and see if they’re going to solve this mystery and accomplish this quest.” What matters most is that our Rangers bring a new and exciting angle to the story.

Because being a Mammal Society Ranger is about more than just documenting for the sake of it: it’s about documenting with a purpose. Rangers will show us the how and why of mammal conservation—how to find, record, and protect mammals—but with an exciting, human-centred narrative.

  • Becoming a Mammal Society Ranger is about more than just funding. It’s about joining a movement. Here’s what we’re offering:

    • Funding for your projects

    • Training and resources to help you sharpen your skills

    • A chance to join a community of like-minded individuals

This isn’t just for people with a degree in conservation biology—it’s for anyone with a passion for mammals and a talent for storytelling. Whether you’re an educator, filmmaker, or outdoor adventurer, this is your opportunity to make a difference.

Why this matters

Because storytelling is the key to conservation. We know this isn’t just about creating nice videos of mammals—it’s about crafting stories with impact. Stories that inspire people to join the fight to protect mammals and their habitats.

By supporting the Mammal Society Rangers, we’re building:

  • A network of citizen science storytellers who can champion mammal conservation

  • New opportunities to engage with people through Instagram, YouTube and beyond

  • A future generation of powerful communicators, trained to bring mammal science to life

This is more than a project—it’s a movement. With a little funding and a lot of passion, we can create a future where storytelling inspires people to protect our mammals and their habitats.
