Spring Heritage talk with Kath Page
Discover the insightful research of Kath Page, a third-year PhD student at the University of the Highlands and Islands, Archaeology Institute in Orkney. Kath, who resides in Helmsdale, Sutherland, has dedicated her studies to understanding the relationship between red deer and humans throughout Scottish Prehistory, from 10,000 BC to 900 AD.
Kath's journey began with her Master's research on the role of red deer in the Orcadian Neolithic, sparking a deep interest in how these relationships evolved over time. Her PhD expands on this by using a case study approach to examine human-red deer interactions through three themes: exploitation and extinction, societal change, and attitudes and ancestors. The attitudes and ancestors case study explores how contemporary attitudes towards red deer and venison consumption compare with those in the prehistoric past.
In collaboration with the Wester Ross UNESCO Biosphere project, Kath is analysing faunal assemblages at archaeological sites on the West coast of Scotland, including Applecross broch and the Mesolithic site at Sand. These studies provide valuable insights into how attitudes towards red deer and venison consumption have shifted over millennia.
Dive into the rich history and archaeology of red deer in Scotland and Wester Ross, and gain unique perspectives from Kath's current research. Attendees will also have the chance to contribute to this exciting project.
