Dan Jarvis

A marine biologist and ecologist, Dan has spent over 20 years working on the frontline of marine mammal response and rescue in the UK, attending several thousand callouts with British Divers Marine Life Rescue in his home county of Cornwall, where he serves as the volunteer Area Coordinator for the region.

Alongside supporting the core day to day management of BDMLR, his key roles are to lead the development and management of training course content and delivery, protocols and resources; proactively engage in collaborative conservation efforts; represent the charity at conferences and meetings; participate in scientific research; and to co-manage the Cornwall Seal Hospital. He has conducted outreach training courses with organisations in other countries including Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Gibraltar, Denmark, France and Egypt to help them develop their own response teams. He also co-chairs the annual Seal Rescue Conference event and associated chat group for rescue and rehabilitation centres across Europe on Whatsapp.

Dan has been a volunteer for BDMLR since 2002 and began working for the charity in 2016 after spending ten years on the Animal Care Team at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. In his spare time he is also a volunteer recorder of dead marine animals and manages the South West UK humpback whale identification catalogue for Cornwall Wildlife Trust; is a post mortem examination volunteer for Cornwall Marine Pathology Team; was a lead marine wildlife surveyor with Organisation Cetacea (ORCA); and is a Director of the Wildlife Safe (WiSe) Scheme. As well as this he was a founding member of the Seal Research Trust in 2004, serving as Secretary and a Trustee in the years since; and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Mammal Society.

In 2018 Dan was honoured by the European Cetacean Society for his various efforts by becoming the youngest ever recipient of the Mandy McMath Conservation Award, as well as being the first to receive it primarily for working with seals and in the field of animal welfare.
