Download the JD and application details

Deadline for applications: 12 Noon, 30th June 2024

The Mammal Society is offering a paid 9-month part-time internship for a career starter or part-time student aged 18-24 from a minority ethnic background looking to gain experience in a small conservation charity.

The Mammal Society recognises the lack of diversity in conservation, and believes that it is important to address this proactively if the sector is to become more inclusive, welcoming and attractive to people from all backgrounds. One of our core values is Inclusivity.

We use the term minority ethnic background to avoid emphasising any specific group or character trait. We use this term to refer to all ethnic groups except the White British group. This includes mixed race people and white minority groups such as Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller communities.

Start date (some flexibility around personal arrangements is possible): 1st September 2024
End date: 31st May 2025

Salary: £20,850 pro rata (Based on National Living Wage for aged 21 and over)
Hours: 22.5 hours per week, schedule to be agreed with successful candidate
Total reimbursement for 9 months at 0.6 P/T hours: £9,382.50 (£1,042.50 per month)

Place of work
Remote, based at home, with equipment provided by Mammal Society, and attendance at quarterly staff meet-ups (location TBC, residential). Travel for events and trainings around the UK may be required (all expenses paid by Mammal Society).

What’s involved?

Through this internship you will gain an insight into various careers and projects in the science and conservation sectors, and into the workings of a small charity, while developing skills and experience in administration, programme management, communications and events. Your main focus will be supporting the planning, logistics and promotion of the Mammal Society’s training courses and events (both in-person and online), however you will have opportunities to gain insight and experience into other aspects of the Mammal Society’s work depending on your interests. A personal development plan will be created in the first phase of your internship, in order to identify how to ensure you get the maximum benefit from your time with the Society. This could include content creation for social media, work on publications and resources, schools engagement, research, campaigning and representing the society at third party events and conferences.

As the Mammal Society is a small organisation we cannot raise expectations of there being opportunities for a permanent paid position at the end of the internship. However as part of your personal development plan you will be supported in exploring opportunities in the sector and planning the next step in your career path.

You will largely be working remotely via email, Teams and cloud file-sharing and database, and using platforms such as Eventbrite and our website CMS. You will be given full training in all systems and processes, and supported by Mammal Society staff to gain confidence and proficiency in all required areas. Some external training may also be provided where it is seen to be valuable.

Application requirements

In order to apply, you must be from a minority ethnic group and be aged 18-24, living permanently in the UK.

We encourage applicants with additional requirements for inclusion. The requirements of the role will be adapted as necessary to accommodate Deaf and/or disabled individuals.
